  1. Using Term with the Communications Toolbox

The capability in Term to use the Communications Toolbox can be used if you are running System 6.0.4 or later.  If you are using System 6, you must install the Communications Toolbox software into your System.  It's already built-in to all versions of System 7.  At least one Communications Toolbox connection tool must be installed by all users.

  5. • Installing the Communications Toolbox for System 6 Users:

Use anonymous FTP to ftp.apple.com.  After connecting, retrieve the disk image of the installation disk.  The file is in the directory "/dts/mac/sys.soft/netcomm", and is named "communications-1-0-2-image.hqx".  Restore the DiskCopy disk image in that file, and use it to make the 800K installation disk named "Communications 1".  Then run the Installer on that disk to install the Communications Toolbox into your system.

Use anonymous FTP to ftp.apple.com.  After connecting, retrieve the disk image of the tools disk.  The file is in the directory "/dts/mac/sys.soft/netcomm", and is named "basic-conn-set-1-1-1-image.hqx".  Restore the DiskCopy disk image in that file, and use it to make the tools disk named "Basic Connectivity Set".  Most users will want to use the Apple Modem Tool on that disk, although the Serial Tool may also be useful in some cases.  The Apple Modem Tool provides full support for many common modems, and the Serial Tools provides a basic serial connection, similar to using Term without the Communications Toolbox.  For System 7, copy the tools you plan to use into the Extensions folder in your System Folder.  For System 6, copy the tools into the folder "Communications Folder" in your System Folder.

Launch Term, then close the initial window Term displays.  Select “Communications…” under the “Settings” menu, and click on “Communications Toolbox”.  Then click on “Configure…”.  After a brief pause, a dialog will be displayed which includes a pop-up menu for selecting among the tools you have installed.  Below that is a dialog for configuring the selected tool.  After selecting a tool and configuring it, click on “OK”, then click on “OK” in Term's Communications dialog.  Finally, invoke the tool by selecting “Open Connection” under the “File” menu.
